one vs many
sooner or later we all experience an uphill fight against the odds. skill can negate the imbalance up to a point... that point seems to be limited by what ship you're in.
so how about it - how many opponents can you take on with a decent chance of victory, and using which ship(s)?
ill start with mamba - 2. yup, only 2 at a time is comfortable. against decent players, a third opponent has an easy time finding opportunities to shoot me down; mamba is maneuverable but slow to react against that many without burning all your afterburner fuel in one go.

f3x - best ship in my opinion to fight against multiple targets. i mean in dodge fight. duel rockets and ship's agility and speed makes it hard to aim at.
for long distance duels its FM25. you can nearly destroy any heavy/medium with one good shot at 1.9 km and second about 1km... and finish it with rocket
i mean 3rd decent opponent atm is nearly unthinkable to kill...

Re: one vs many
Duel:-
a prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, especially to settle a private quarrel, or...
any contest between two persons or parties.
Dual:-
having a twofold, or double, character or nature.
</dictionary>
Still doesn't make sense though using the word duel as the nature of the thread implies more than one opponent :p
On the other hand, I'm imagining Game of Thrones knights riding their chargers up & down the lists, firing off rockets at each other & trying to fend them off with shields.

If you're talking about them coming in a stream, fm25 on a good day i can take them out all day.
If they attack together though it depends what craft they're using. if they're 3Xs then i can take about 3 to 4 if i can hit them every time with at least one beam or full rocket. (this is an extraordinary example though, i rarely am able to hit things straight with a rocket so 3 if i somehow manage to be awesome )
but typically it's about 2-3. FM-25 is fairly powerful when you know how to use it

depends on your definition of noobs.eltazar wrote:noobs doesnt count...
you would need to break it down into specific skills, such as aiming and piloting as a starting point. to that end a noob in either category does not pose a significant threat - to point out that there are players out there that can aim well, or fly well, cannot do the other and the results against the top players vary wildly as consequence.
sidewinder can handle up to 3 players but depends on your ability to stay on the move. more between rocks.
even now abstaining from MB for long stretches of time, it still is not out of the question to stay on top of two (decent) players at the same time. entirely situational however, if the players you're up against are good to start with or are a pack of skittish opportunists (stay at distance, charge in and shoot at an already-engaged enemy). particularly i will point out how much of a crapheap the game becomes when this happens with G5's, players that lurk in G5's and pick off targets that are already engaged in a fight to one or more other players... it no longer becomes a matter of survival but avoidance (similar to rants about role missiles have in the meta), and a real buzzkill.
be warned though, i have no mercy or patience left in this game for anyone looking for cheap shots; i stopped playing because it got out of hand, and now i play for vengeance on those i see doing this

I believe it was Hans Joachim Marseille who said u can take on any number of opponents, just be careful about the one on your 6, thats the one that can cause real damage, and in that position only one can fit.
He took 6 british Hurricanes flying in ring formation, germans were advised to not engage under that situation. They never knew what hit them.

Re: one vs many
Seems like strange advice from a German pilot, as they were trained in energy fighting tactics where you're usually diving on opponents from above, shooting at the full profile of their plane rather than sitting on their 6.
These tactics made the ring formation, an old WW1 invention that was also known as the defensive or Lufberry Circle, easy prey for his attack. The Hurricanes could out-turn any German fighter & the circle was invented to guard against horizontal turn-fighting based attacks, as if you tried to get on the 6 of one of those planes you'd find one of his friends immediately attacking you. The formation was absolutely useless against energy-based boom and zoom attacks from above, where the 'canes could be picked off without being able to either fight back or run away.
Also think how it is in MB - is it easier to kill someone when you're on their 6 and they're dodging around, or when you hit them unawares from an angle as they move across your field of vision presenting their full profile as a target?
Anyway, thus endeth the dogfight tactics sermon

Heh, well, one thing I've loved about War Thunder is that its allowed me to learn energy tactics & become fairly good @ them. The OP of this thread, however, is not only a good energy fighter but is more than capable of diving into a furball of WW2 planes & take on a crowd of enemies in a tight turning battle, something I've never mastered.
