Counter-Reviews

Post by Loki on Tue Sep 04, 2012 10:45 am

Game reviews suck; they're written by people who have to crank one or three out every week and we all know that Moon Breakers is a bit punishing on rookies. These reviewers play for a couple hours, then leave before they have a chance to learn any more about the game, then they tell others they didn't like it.

So here's some links to get some positive comments going;
Upvote the game rating.
Jump into the comment threads on these with positive feedback.
Upvote and comment on YouTube vids.
Direct people to the forums either here or on Userecho. I'll even make it easy;

moonbreakers.forumotion.com
moonbreakers.userecho.com

Make people realize the game is worth playing.

Just to change it up, here's a review that doesn't suck.

some of the reviewers are paid to make independent games look bad, not all of them but most its just about money, most of them work like unnoficial cryers for big companies, the best way to counter this is to make our own reviews and put them on youtube
also we need the social update that would be a huge improvement for the game

Sure... but a lot of the reviews are dead on... and thats a problem.
They say it's pay to win. Sure we know it's not, but we can't prove that while the merlin is still sitting there with a huge price tag.
They say it crashs all the time... they are correct
They say is only has three maps and three game modes... tick

We can't really counter game reviews when the game reviews are for once 100% correct.

I see your point. But giving advice and directing them here are great ways of countering encouraging people to stick with it a bit rather than giving up after a few matches. We've got a huge section devoted to helping people learn how to play, so let's direct them here.

1)i never spent a single coin in MB not that im proud of it since i want the game to get better but i have my ''issues'' when it comes to foreign transactions, expensive ships are like some form of endgame content there is no fun if you get all the cool stuff as soon as you start playing and the merlin isnt the only ship that can kill things, after the last updates prestige ships are more for multi role pilots rather than a straight advantage and i like the way it is, if you want a ship that can do nearly everything then save some creds and get a prestige but if you want to kill things and get away with it then buy an A80 or a nighthawk even now you have the G5 wich its like a prestige ship for the noob since it can cover many roles even work as a flag taker wich the merlin can't thanks to its ridiculously slow boost speed i can give you more examples of why prestige ships are more a commodity than a necessity, still the main point is that you dont need a merlin or any other prestige ships to be somebody in the game

2)i ve seen an improvement in fixing the crashes in the last update its not perfect but its far better than the last version

3)3 maps and 3 gamemodes thats sadly true and i believe its the killing blow

Just going to point out that the thing with the Merlin is that is APPEARS to be the most powerful ship, if not by the stats then by the price tag. I still think it's a little overpowered but it's a lot more balanced than it was. The thing is it LOOKS like a overpowered ship to reviewers and new players.

I think dropping all of the prestige ship price tags would really help the game, because then they won't be the prestige ships... they'll just be ships. and reviewers would have a lot less ammunition to shot us down with.

Wow... there is nothing but bad rap for moonbreakers, that Spacegamejunkie site bans people who say they like it because "they must be spammers"

Maybe we should seriously consider taking the game out of public use into a closed beta, get it good... and then release it under a different name.

Post by Viking Jack on Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:42 pm

damnation! i just wrote a message explaining why i dont like to lower the prices of the prestige ships and the forum ate it:(

ok im going to make it short

the prices were already high and they lowered it once a merlin was like 3.8 millions to unlock and the other prestige were like 2.9 millions if my memory doesnt fail even a G5 was 320k creds to unlock, lowering the prices would be like starting a mmo with full lvl and top tier armor were is the fun in that? the players need to work for the best things that way they play a lot and get to know the game and the other ships not only the prestige ones

as for the ''reviewers'' no matter how much you improve the game their job is to say wow look at this game its lame better go and buy BF3 and COD3 thats were the action is! the fact that they ban people for defending MB proves my point and the fact adolf hitler survived WW2 and works as a moderator

the only way to counter this is to make our own good reviews as loki said

as for the merlin stats any pilot that sees the boost speed and capacity is going to buy a swordfish rather than a merlin and that is something you learn with game experience, sure firepower, shields and turn rate are important but all the seasoned pilots know that boost fuel and speed are your real weapons in a dogfight, so far the only advatage of the merlin are the low profile that makes it dificult to hit and the accurate 3 nose MGs

You play games for the unlocks?
Okay try this... Halo.
Never EVER has there been unlockable items that affect gamplay in Halo. And it is without a doubt up there with BF for the best multiplayer FPS.

Ok enough already !

Everyone rattles on about prices and pay to win.
Look on the websites and show me a game that doesn't want you to pay something to get a bigger this or better that ! !

Actually do the other games allow you to amass or earn CREDIT to get the items for FREE ! ! !

and my exclamations are getting longer as I get more annoyed ! ! ! ! Very Happy

I am always saving up for the next ship, but it's starting to run a little slim on the selection for me.
Next options left are bombers or the A80. Not sure I could fly a bomber other than the Timberwolf; that thing is just fun to fly.

i play for fun and the unlocks are part of that, unlocks are nothing but one of the ingredients that make a game fun as for halo i never played it to be hones i dont even like the franchise all i know is that it has a huge fan base, back with the topic i dont see whats wrong about the unlocks in a game they add fun, you have people working to get the guns or ships that fit their gameplay style.
you speak like the unlocks in MB were some rare commodity that only a few millonaire from the elite can achieve but the truth is that everyone can get a prestige ship or any other ship for free as for the people that pay to get them faster, well they are the ones who pay for the servers and the game development so remember to say thank you whenever you see them because they are the difference between joining a server and getting a ''cannot connect all servers offline'' sign in the middle of the screen

Xron, I have never seen a merlin and been scared unless it's being piloted by someone scary. I worry about pilots, not their ships. Pretty much anyone who reviews a game where all ships are available to everyone as Pay 2 Win is an idiot. As soon as they claim Pay 2 Win they should be ignored. There's nothing locked behind a paywall...paying just makes it faster to receive.

The G5 scares me a lot more than a Merlin. The Viper is amazing but who out there actually worries when they see a viper coming in a dogfight? Unless of course it's piloted by a scary person?

Crashes, Game Modes...yeah, those are legitimate. IT'S F2P! I'm baffled how people expect a free to play browser based game to have the same level of depth as Ultima Online. "No story! Why am I killing those Pirates? This doesn't make sense!?"

Because Halo so well explained why Red team wanted the Blue team dead, right? Sheesh.

EDIT: My friend who just started playing MB yesterday told me: "I haven't had this much fun playing a fast FPS since Quake3." And I realized. Yeah, this is basically the Quake 3 of space FPS. Die/Respawn/keep killing. Only there are no powerups. I still can't figure out why people aren't flocking to this game. I would think maybe if we pipe in some Pendulum as the soundtrack people might better get the rhythm of the game and wouldn't leave after dying 8 times in a Mamba. haha

Ferc is right on all counts.

I look for names I recognize, then glance at their ship type so I know what to expect.

People who claim Pay to Win don't stick around long enough to realize;
1) they see price tags of ships and want to unlock everything immediately, but don't want to pay, so they bitch about it.
2) they often don't have any real interest in a game they have to learn how to play. They fly a Mamba a few times, then hop in a bomber and nuke-spam their way to a new ship or they quit. This is a problem.

WJ is trying to fix the "hard on rookies" part by giving them easier things to do than the regular mission objectives, as well as adding gameplay tips. We can help by offering advice and directing them to Userecho and here. I've spammed tips and links into the lobby or during play, and given up a several play sessions helping out a new player with some training. (...as well as many hours here)

Also, it's awesome your friend is having a good time with Moon Breakers Smile What's his tag?

Xron, you're a beamship master; what advice would you give to a player new to beamships? Which would you recommend first and why?

Re: Counter-Reviews

Post by Ferc Polo on Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:59 pm

My buddy plays as The Tickler. He's quickly learning to chase me at every opportunity. This is good because that's how I got better that this game. I chased Loki, X, Abstractness, Snubby as much as I could.

Much can be learned from seeing how experienced players avoid YOU. You learn what works, what doesn't, and what you should NOT do. The trickier a pilot the more I enjoy chasing them.

Also: The nighthawk should be a free ship. It's cheap as hell anyway, which I suppose is good because it could be a first purchased ship...but beam weapons are so specialist I don't see newbs choosing it to learn. This way at least they can get a feel for a different type of combat. I also feel like we'd see more of them out there. Maybe expand the roster of newbie ships a bit. Add variants. I would LOVE to fly a Mamba with a beam cannon instead of machine guns...The Krait is not that ship. I would also like to fly a Krait with a small cannon. That could be a lot of fun. There isn't a single light ship with a heavy hitting ballistic. The Krait is the current ONLY choice of high burst DPS light. Why can't we have a smaller G5?

I'll look for him. Might have seen him a few times.

WJ keeps saying that ships will become cheap and upgrades will get more expensive, while leaving the Mamba and Rhino as the first rookie ships. I don't know what "cheap" or "expensive" means in relative terms, but it sounds like you can acquire ships faster than you can upgrade them.
There will be more variety in ship builds, too, since there will be more upgrade types available (acceleration, heat sink, etc.). WJ has hinted that we'll be able to stock several builds of each ship to swap between at no extra charge for added awesomeness.

Some have requested to be able to purchase more upgrade slots for He3, but I see this as end-game content; each additional upgrade slot should also be available with creds, but I imagine a price tag of around 1 million creds per slot, then a steep price to fill the extra slot. Makes cred boosters more viable and desireable as well as giving long-term player's interest.

Re: Counter-Reviews

I was under the understanding that the Mamba and Rhino was not going to be kept as the free ships, rather he was going to give every new player enough cred to buy one ship and have a large enough free ship rotation that you don't need to buy ships unless there was one you liked and wanted to keep.
See Super Monday Night Combat for that unlock model, it works well.
This way he can make the Mamba and Rhino a bit more special.

As for beam ships... the Krait/Cobra should be easier available than the Nighthawk, they are much more forgiving if you miss making it easier to learn.
My Recommendation for first beam ship would be the Krait, it's fast heat sink means that you get a lot of chances to hit with the beam, thus more practice. Once your competent you should get a nighthawk and use it a lot, even if you prefer the Krait the discipline learned using the Nighthawk make the Krait a lot more effective.
As for the Cobra, machine gun discipline is just as important as beam skill if not more so it's a better follow on from the mamba or sidewinder rather than the beam ships.

I stand corrected.

Krait & Cobra over the Nighthawk to start is great advice.

Any more suggestions on beamships? Like how to use Zoom? (yes, I'm looking for stuff to add to the Gameplay Tips list for WJ)

Press "F"
My other tip is to learn is to prioritize targets.
If your flying the Krait you really want to go for heavier targets, it's duel rockets can mess up anything if you get them to hit and then the beams can finish them off quickly.
With the nighthawk you want to go for softer targets, all light fighters are insta kill if you get both beam's on and all fighters other than the barracuda and the stingray can be brought down with both beams and a tad of damage, even a hammer head only needs to lose a third of it's shield and it's easy pickings.

Oh rockets. Learning rockets well is 40% of beam ships, they are you back up and your life saver. Especially the Nighthawk, I get just as many kills with air burst rockets as I do with the death lasers, they are perfect for finishing of the medium and heavy fighters after a duel beam hit or the light fighters if you only winged them with one beam.

I've seen him on quite a bit, is fearless & keeps at it like a dog with a bone. Once he learns not to fly in a straight line (which will come soon enough) and then adds the other subtleties of the game he'll be pretty good I think. Should get him to join up here!
