Running away like a bitch. Empty Running away like a bitch.

Post by Bhrome Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:03 pm

STOP IT.

Seriously.

You're aces. ACT LIKE IT.

I understand getting out of a bad situation, regrouping, regenerating, and getting back in it. I enjoy making people chase you through a field of asteroids, because it takes skill to zip through that on full boost, and if people can catch up to you, then they've earned the kill. It makes sense when you're trying to capture the flag; that's kindof the point of that game type. I can even understand trying to lure a bunch of turtled tangos away from their carrier, but I've seen far too many aces fly all the way across the map, hide in their carrier, and sit there like a whimpering bitch, just because one person started shooting at them.

Knock it off.

Here's how it breaks down:
1) You waste your own and your team's time. Flying all the way back to the carrier takes time, and during that time, you're not gaining any kills, you're not running the flag, and you're not assaulting their carrier. I.E. You're losing. Not only are you losing, but your team is losing because of you. You could argue that if you survive, you're taking a kill away from the enemy, but I'd rather have everyone focused on the objective than one less kill on the enemy's tally.

2) You're going back to the carrier anyway, why not blow up? Once you get to the carrier, your ass end is probably shot to shite, you're probably out of boost, and your testicles have been jettisoned out the exhaust. You have to spend a good amount of time waiting for all of that to slowly come back (the testicles might be lost for good). Sticking around in a fight, you might get blown up; Heck, you probably will get blown up, but you also might blow someone else up, AND you magically reappear back at the carrier with full shields and boost (and both testicles). So why not man up and explode?

3) loss of morale/cover for teammates. How shite is it to be flying with three buddies towards the carrier, only to find yourself alone when you get there? Very shite. So when you're in a furball, and you see one of your team flying away, you're going to wonder if maybe you're losing that battle, and what those two tiny orbs are floating around in space (Hint: they're testicles not wanting to be a part of such cowardice). So not only are you distracted by your buddy zooming off (and his balls splatting against your cockpit), but the enemy has one less person to shoot at, causing their fire to be focused more on the people who are still in possession of both testes.

There might be more reasons, but frankly I think this is enough. So to put it all in one simple catch phrase:

Man up: Blow up.

Sadly, many that this post would apply to are not members of the forum to read it. Even if they aren't, I'm quite confident that they realize exactly the point you're making and often cry themselves to sleep for being a coward in many other facets of their lives...

If I'm in something fast enough to chase, I like to follow them inside their carrier and take them out while they hide (unless we're on Rock Field and near the home carrier). Sidewinder or G5 is great for this due to fast rocket reloads.

I'll duck away from a fight if I'm being overwhelmed, but I'll head for some rocks and try to take out as many as I can before they get me.

Does it count as cowardice if I run and hide at the enemy carrier though? v:

It's a neat trick that. The external enemy turrets are entirely meaningless and people tend to be overconfident when on their home turf. People see you barreling past them towards their carrier, they tend to chase. Add to that most pilots' inability to tell their own asses from up when around a carrier and you have the ideal setup for shooting in the back the people who think they're chasing you.

The trick isn't to fight in front of the enemy carrier, it's to lure enemies to fight behind it. Nobody clears the baffles.

i can understand your frustration at those who run off at the sight of just one enemy flying at them (or after taking any damage at all since leaving their carrier). in ca & ctf there are times when you need to return to your carrier, and yes you're sometimes better off being blown up than trying to leg it all the way back (which for both game types is mostly detrimental).

this point only applies to s&d games, but anyway... if the odds appear to you such that you won't be able to score a kill or aid in one before being overwhelmed, retreating to avoid being killed could be desirable for two, and only, two reasons. 1, you draw in enemy ships closer to your own team / carrier. and 2, you avoid the other team from scoring another kill (and possible assist). while i cant see a reason to argue against #1, #2 i expect some to take issue with because it is cheap... yes it does bring the kill/death efficiency up a little when you do it, and yes it is a cheap tactic.

and as far as running from just one enemy goes, yeah, its pointlessly dull. the only excuses are either to skirmish with that one target (ie, try to re-approach them from a more favorable angle / buy time to regenerate boost) or because you see that they have backup some distance away with nothing to do...

but that aside, it is irritating indeed to chase down someone who runs away for no discernibly good reason...

Hmmm, I suppose so. Ovaries? Theoretical testes? Or perhaps just replace 'testes' with 'Honor, scruples, and earned respect'.

There's a couple of aces I lost respect for because they've resorted to this kind of tactic.

Haha, no, that's pretty badass. I know I've done it a few times. Getting people to chase you around the tail-fins is always a good time. Ends up being sort of a scooby-doo type scenario, where they're chasing me, then I'm chasing them, then they can't find me 'cause I've flown away, then they run into a wall and die. Laughing

And I do make allowances for those scenarios. Making a tactical retreat because there's a wall of red flying your way is just smart.

Even in Carrier assault and CTF, why would you want to lure your enemy to your carrier? That's where they wanted to go in the first place. In all game types, the enemy carrier is the font of all objectives. Luring an enemy there is like saying, "hey, you might not be able to get me, but there's a nice, juicy flag up there for the taking." or "Why don't you stick around for a while and blow up some turrets?"

Now, I realize that most noobs aren't going to take advantage of the opportunity presented to them, because they're noobs and don't know how to play the game, but if you're running from just one noob all the way back to your carrier to gain 'tactical advantage', you need to stop playing for a while and re-evaluate your life.

Hm. I view this tactic as legitimate. I can count any number of times where I've been fixated on destroying someone in CA and they've pulled that. I end up forgetting my place and get dragged away to god knows where, then I turn around and see mushroom clouds. Embarassed

Yeah, I'll admit to ducking into the carrier once or twice in a round before I get blown to hell. That usually only happens when the battle is RIGHT outside our front door, and a couple unlucky saps try to follow me. I use it a herd-thinning technique when my boys are getting swamped in a S&D match, the green-tails who don't know follow, and get blown right out the airlock, but then I come RIGHT back out, guns blazing.

To camp outside the carrier, tossing nukes or missiles, taking potshots at the flag runner, only to duck back inside when someone shoots at you, is complete and total cowardice, and is simply horrid.

It's better to die on my feet, than live life on my knees.

My view is that you are going to see this sort of behaviour, be it from an ace or any of the less skilled players. Don't get tied up in how others play just enjoy what you do... After all its just a game... If you are going to start getting wound up by others behaviour then you are on a downhill slope my friend...

Sure i've seen camping bombers take a few bullets and duck in the carrier, its slightly frustrating but deal with it, if you dont like thier game play style dont pursue them, sure on occasion I've taken a tactical retreat usually into the roids or carrier if i'm conveniently close when i've picked up one too many competent tails and need a shield regen. The carrier internal turrets are very good at evening the odds when you have 3 or 4 after you. About half the time its the correct tactic and can often get me back in the fight 10-15 seconds sooner than getting iced and respawning, the other 50% well some people just won't give up on a chase which I respect....

The thing that really makes me laugh about this game is if you are doing really well in a round... you worked up a 1k bounty and its all looking great, then all of a sudden half a dozen enemy see red and the price tag on your head and you get swamped, you try to work the angles, maybe take out one or two, but you just get completely overwhelmed with red trails all around you.... there are times I have been right on the last cpl of segments of shield and looked behind thinking... I'll just let go of the mouse and watch the explosion...... now that is the time when you do just have to let go.... but if you have a chance of evade and regen then take it...!

im going to share my ''solution'' with you, if they are on the enemy team simply ignore them, let them run to their carrier while you kill 4 or more of their teammates that would frustrate them to the point of rage quit, if they are on your team simply kill more foes than them and brag of it all day that would get them angry and competitive enough to throw self preservation away

my 2 cents

I mostly camp outside of my own carrier and pull defense, but that's mostly in CTF and Assault. In S&D, I have been known to blast into a swarm of five or more enemies (Sometimes up to ten, on a good match...) with my shield indicator only showing one or two blips. I'm usually killed within a minute or two, but I can still wreak havok on the enemy.
This tactic helps quite a bit on CTF, too... I pick up the flag and run it as close to the base as I can get. This aids in retrieving the flag before it resets to the top of the enemy carrier by resetting the timer thing. There was one CTF match where I ran the flag through the rock field map, I got it about half way, and was killed. As soon as I respawned, I immediately emptied my boost to retrieve the flag and got it closer to my carrier. I repeated this pattern four or five times until, voila! the flag was captured.
Smart? Hell no. Brave? Of that, there can be no doubt.

I miss, when the carriers had the anemic MG turrets inside. It was fun dogfighting in the enemy carrier, and too many are exploiting the inside of their carrier as a safe zone. I would like to see the heavy beam cannons replaced with fast tracking MG turrets. That way they could take out nukes, but would not be a major threat to raiders chasing down crybabies, who like to pout inside their carriers.

i have mixed feelings on inside turrets....

on the one hand, you dont want the inside of your carrier being home to 4 enemy bombers cleverly evading the turrets, lobbing nukes into their blind zones (or away from the turrets such that the turrets dont aim at the nukes).

on the other hand, you dont want crybabies living in their carrier either...

happy medium?

mg's wont stop bombers, you need the beams... beams are excessively op for this reason, but in effect also safeguard anyone inside their carrier almost to a guarantee.

clearly the answer is mg turrets inside... but... these turrets must prioritize nukes over ships (currently they do not). or better yet, more turrets around the blimin front/rear entrances (the front/rear entrances are prone to nuke shots from the inside aiming at the inner sides of the carrier, which turrets cannot reach while they are trying to shoot down the bombers flying about)

Actually, I just recently installed a high power wide band radio transmitter into my G5, so from time to time I cut in on everyone's radio chatter in order to zoidberg it up. Also, who's to say I'm running away from missiles? Normally it's between 4 and 7 angry mambas on my tail.
