Not sure what to think about this. It feels for all the world like Braben saw the (modest) success of Star Citizen with it's kickstarter campaign
and decided to get in quick. The projected release date is a few months before SC is due too. Choice is good I suppose but if the funding comes from a common pool then the two projects could harm each other. I imagine Braben hopes that the Elite brand will give them the edge, even if they don't seem to have much of anything to show for their project yet.
The concepts are basically identical so if Elite wins out, it will be at the expense of SC (and vice versa). Notch's space game will take a hit too. I dunno, you wait decades for a decent space game (if you mention eve, I will hurt you ) then three come along at once and seem poised to maul each other to death. F*ckin' typical aint it.

Competition is theoretically healthy. While many players will end up with all three games, most others will have to pick just one (money & time). That will hurt the other two's launch revenue and could determine which one survives the year. Marketing will probably play a large part.
The one guy claims that "it's been in the works for years" and "had some false starts", which may explain why we've had such a drought of this type of game for a while.
Or perhaps it's just that people miss the space games of their youth and saw a gap in the market to fill.

Their own fault:
I wrote it to the Elite programmer, the day I heard about wasteland 2, but did he react... no. Waited for SC.
Like IMBA. They have a good working engine, where the others still must develop, and also make MB a MMORPG or what with immense galaxy, a very good fighting engine. What they need is the strategic part and there is the Next Generation Space Sim since Freespace we wait for, but what do they do, they invest in Supreme Commander 3, a field which is now relatively dead, as it came 2 years late.
Well, never understand programmers I thing...they never hear on their Supporters...
