I have a fully updated FH-100 and Mamba, and 350k in the bank.

Should I (a) spend it on a Cobra, Sidewinder or A80, and if so which, (b) lash out on a bomber, in the knowledge that I've never had much success flying bombers of any persuasion & I'd much rather shoot them down, or (c) keep saving up for a Piranha (400k) or one of the prestige fighters?

I'd go with a Cobra, except when it was free a week or two ago I could never get its beam cannon secondary to work reliably - for me it would fire once, then appear to be reloaded but when I let loose from point blank range nothing would happen.

I would suggest the A-80 because it's the business...but since you already use the 100 you may enjoy something else. Then again, my first plane was the 100, I upped it fully, then I bought the A-80 and I've picked the 100 two times since. I mean that. Two times. The A-80 is the Superhero the 100 dreams of becoming. If you ENJOY piloting a heavy fighter you can go for the precision, speed, and firepower of an FH-200...or you can go with the absolute brute force and double thick armor of an A-80.

Lol, I could have guessed what you'd recommend Smile Hey if I could switch out my FH-100's dual cannons onto the A-80 I'd take it in a heartbeat! Then again, the Hammerhead is sadly lacking in classic 70s rock songs, eg:-

You lying so low in the rocks
I bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have my shields in the red
Wouldn't you Barracuda?

If the missiles don't do the trick
You'd better make up something quick
Your afterburners ain't looking so slick
Are they Barracuda?

OTOH it was a Barra that killed Nemo's mother. That's not something I can readily forgive.

To be serious for a sec though, I flew the A-80 a fair bit in the Chrome days, and sucked royally (still have quite a few upgrades on it from back then). If it appears on the free ship rotation next week I'll give it a spin, but chances are I still suck Smile

Buy a Sidewinder. It's the fastest ship and therefore ideal for flagruns. The low shielding requires to use it's high agility to avoid getting shot or rammed, wich increases your skill for dogfights. Because its machineguns are much closer togheter then in a Mamba, you can hit your target with higher percision. It's possible to kill 28 in Search&Destroy in a Sidewinder.

There's a part of me that also says get something that's still relatively rare so you can become the resident expert! Very Happy

In the end though - fly what's going to make it fun for you, and make you a challenge for others cause that's what'll keep interest in the game going. Ferc Polo said the truth too, fly what feels right, lol.

I'm still mucking around in the F3 and G5 mostly to practice drifting and accuracy. My gameplay at the moment is still way to erratic for my liking. Really liked the X99 when it was free-2-fly... might start saving creds to unlock that. Long haul project though, lol.

Gratz on accumulating so many creds btw! Razz

The Kingfisher is literally my most hated foe as an A-80. It's the only thing that has the punch and the gun location (dead center) to go head to head and hurt me. Usually since I'm rolling and they aren't I can survive...but shoot does that cannon hurt.

I'd go for Sidewinder or continue to save up for the Piranha.

Quick note on Cobra's beam;
The beam canon on the Cobra isn't really tied to the 'reload' graphic, but your machine gun heat sink. If you've been firing your machine gun, you won't be able to fire the beam, as the beam requires you to be at less than 20% heat before you can fire.

Wow that certainly explains it, thanks for pointing it out Smile

Basically then the Beam on the Cobra is only useful for sniping at range, as in combat you'd be crazy to use it instead of your guns, seeing its an either-or choice. Not unless you had the enemy dead to rights in your reticule. If you're planning on using Beam in a dogfight, the Krait's a far superior ship.

The original intent was probably 'use beam, then close for kill with guns', but you CAN use the beam up close; Deviant Saint is pretty awesome at it, and it surprises the hell out of people.
Practice using it up close on turrets while drifting and you'll get the hang of aiming well enough to use it in a dogfight.
I prefer the Cobra to the Krait (not much time logged in Krait so far) because it's got the machine guns as backup. Krait might be my next ship, though.

Just noticed your bomber comment. I wasn't much of a bomber jockey until I picked up a Timberwolf, and I suddenly became a mad bomber (when appropriate; Carrier Assault when turrets are gone and CTF [yes, CTF!])...something to be said about cruising along ignoring enemy fire for a while. Things got even more fun when they added the remote detonation to torps.

Still, a Piranha or Sidewinder will serve you well, but it depends on your play style.

Just spent a bit of time in a Krait & then the Piranha - I should really have taken more advantage of the free offer this week.

Firstly I'm confirmed in my thoughts that if you want a beam cannon in a light fighter the Krait is way better than the Cobra because it reloads at nearly twice the rate, and machine guns aren't much use if they're overheated after firing the beam. If you can get accurate with that weapon its absolutely deadly, but so far for me I can only hit things using zoom (very handy for stopping a Viper running with your flag btw), and zoom blinds you to all else happening around. It seems to shoot more where ship is pointing & bit less where the mouse is, unlike machine guns, but I'll need to fly it more. Even so, wasn't hard to rack up quite a few kills in furball dogfights.

The Piranha is something else. My what firepower. Any light that gets remotely in your sights just does not stand a chance, and bombers don't last long either. Of course, a light gets behind/above/beside/below you & in the hands of a skilled pilot & you're dead meat, especially if they're flying a blasted Krait & know how to aim it Wink

I bought a Panther last night...It's okay so far. Damn near impossible to hit anything within 500m due to the very wide cannons...but it's fast, I like that.

Grey Man AKA Krait Man. He is proof that with practice comes scary power with a Krait.

Well you know what I am going to say Panther!
+ : Speed, more armour that Timberwolfe and slightly better turning rate against
- : Cannon, although used wisely they are devastating

Finally you could save it up ? Wink

Save up even more, if you have 1 million credits you can unlock ANYTHING, lol. But probably more fun/versatile to unlock 2+ ships rather than just one Smile

540k now. Saving for a x99 Merlin to go with my v-66 Viper and FH-250 swordfish.

I have no reason to tell you this other that to let you know I have nice toys.

After the Merlin I want to get a Kingfisher or Cobra.

The Merlin is astounding, worth every penny. The F-250 is pretty good but I don't think it's really worth double the FH-200. The Viper I haven't flown but I'm only about 80K away from one so I guess I'll find out.

Yeah, I'd recommend a Panther or Timber-wolf as an early purchase since they make bombing and CTF much more fun.
