Ship recommendation?

Post by ratcharmer on Tue Aug 07, 2012 10:56 pm

So I'm about to take a pretty big step in my MoonBreaker career.

I'm about to get my first ship (other than Mamba/Rhino). Since it's taken me weeks to get enough credits I would really like to make sure I end up happy with my decision. That's where you folks come in Smile

The three ships I'm thinking about most seriously right now are the Cobra, the G-5 and the Timberwolf.

My "ideal" ship would be something like the Mamba minus the "drunken ice skater" handling and maybe a little better firepower/shielding. I'm willing to trade some cruising speed since in combat it's mostly about the afterburner anyway. I've tried beam cannons on the Krait and the Nighthawk and thought they were usable, but I missed having MG's for closer enemies.

On the Cobra: the obvious appeal here is having both the MG's and the beam cannon, and also the stats are quite similar to the Mamba I'm used to flying. My concerns with the Cobra are 1) the shared heat sink for primary and secondary--does this mean that if I fire my MG's at all the beam cannon won't go off? 2) this is the most expensive ship I'm looking at and 3) from looking at the stats the Cobra's DPS and HP look to be even LOWER than the Mamba's.

On the G-5: unless the fast cannon handle's significantly different than MG's the weapon's setup for the G-5 is pretty familiar. Having seen other people fly them the Kingfisher looks to handle like a dream and be considerably more durable than the Mamba. The only real concerns I have are 1) firepower--I'm hearing a lot of talk about how low the Kingfisher's DPS is (how does it compare to the Mamba?) and 2) It recently got buffed, so I might buy it only to have it immediately get nerfed.

On the Timberwolf: a bomber originally wasn't even on my list of things to look at, but then I tried this one during a free week and had a lot of success. It handles well for a bomber and there's something very satisfying about nuking things. My main concern is that this would be a very situational ship and if I'm only going to have one ship I want it to be something I can fly during any mission.

Final note: I will NOT get a heavy fighter or one of the "elite" ships.

Anyways, thoughts? opinions? Anything you'd like to contribute would be welcome.

my suggestion would be go for the G5 its like a jack of all trades and with the latest upgrades it has become a force to be reckoned with, sure the fast cannon its a bit tricky to aim but you will master it with the time

stick with the cobra.

the shared heatsink is a problem, but you're lucky.. many here remember it as it used to be (as you described, fire the mg and cant use the beam until completely cooled down), this is not the case anymore.

the cobra has 1000 heat, beam generates 700. so long as your ship's heat is 30% or below, you can beam away. the cobra also now has a large heat capacity compared to other machine gun ships (excluding bombers), so the machine gun can be held down way longer than on a mamba before overheating.

the cobra is slower than a mamba and doesn't regenerate boost as quickly, but it has a decent turn rate still and doesn't drift as much (the drunken ice skater thing you mentioned). drift is actually a desirable trait, allowing you to fly alongside and around your target while aiming at them for a period of time. but to each their own...

the G5 - drifts like a mamba, not your style, but it's hardy and fast. the low dps (damage per second) compared to other ships leaves something to be desired but it is a well rounded and very effective ship nontheless.

the timberwolf is now the fastest bomber with above par boost tanks. it has the weakest shielding of any bomber to offset this, and it's torpedoes arm a little faster, do a bit less damage to other ships, and travel longer (by 25% approx)

of these 3, id stick with a cobra unless you learn to drift, which i would advise, then a kingfisher/G5.

@the-anger:
I guess I should clarify a bit-- my issue with the Mamba isn't so much the drifting in and of itself (I actually do use the drift fairly effectively when taking down turrets) as it is that I take issue with having to use up my after burner during routine maneuvers, only to not have any left when I need it. Can the G5 corner decently without using it's afterburner?

Thanks for the info everyone!

P.S. how are the G5 and Cobra at dodging tracking missiles?

The shared heat sink really isn't a problem on the Cobra anymore. You can fire bullets in much longer bursts than any light, or fire a beam & still have bullets to shoot.

It barely drifts at all, so if drifting isn't your thing then the Cobra will suit you. However its not as fast as other lights, and still suffers the same lack of shields - if you're caught in the open expect mediums and heavies to squish you like a bug.

I'd think of a T Wolf only if you like attacking the carrier in CA games - imho its now probably the best bomber for that purpose given its speed.

The G5 is awesome to fly, and perfect for taking out turrets and flag capping, but learning to hit moving targets with it will take some getting used to. It has so much afterburner on tank that you rarely need worry about running out.

Re avoiding missiles, that comes down to how you fly more than anything else. Putting something solid between you and the missile (like an asteroid) works well, otherwise its sharp turns & boosting away in a direction where the missile can't turn sharply enough to follow - both the Cobra and G5 are more than capable of that.

no ship can corner decently when you fight an experienced pilot, you are going to always need boost, to be fair its like your stamina in a fist fight so do not waste it in trivial matters or if you dont feel like dueling and using boost try sneak and surprise tactics like hiding behind asteroids or picking unaware foes but in seriou dogfight you always have to use boost

You made some great choices, but I highly recommend you "try before you buy" if possible. Free-to-fly ships rotate, so you probably won't have to wait long before trying any one or two ships you're thinking to buy.

That said, I know it's really hard to wait - especially for your first ship. I think the G5 is a better buy right now, and able to earn you more, faster.

+1

Boost is a sparse commodity - it comes in limited amount, and is necessary for almost all specialized maneuvering. The good news is that with practice you will end up using less and less of it at a time. A technique known as 'feathering' is used by most if not all top players - tapping the boost just long enough and frequently enough to maintain a high speed (with this it is possible for the sidewinder to do laps around the levels without reducing speed, and the G5 and mamba to a lesser extent).

In many cases you don't need to use as much boost as you might think. The worst offender for this is U-Turning - this can and will eat through half your boost if you're not careful. Avoid boosting unless you need a massive acceleration right then and there, or you are near top speed and need more. Basically stick to this and you will be fine: boost in bursts to dodge and to change direction suddenly, and feather it for when you need to cover a lot of ground (space?) fast.

On top of all this excellent advice, I'd like to add that the ship structure of the game is going to change in the near future; we're all going to be reverted to a couple of base ships and creds refunded.

But until that happens, the Kingfisher, Cobra, and Timberwolf are all excellent ships, though from what I read, the Kingfisher is more what you're looking for; more firepower, slightly less drifty, and can take a beating.

My experience with bombers is that I disliked them until I picked up a Timberwolf. Now I have the most fun when outrunning carrier defenders and shoving torpedoes into uncomfortable places.

Actually, the Kingfisher doesn't have "more firepower". The single mounted fast cannon has a fairly low DPS. Dual machine guns yield 25% more DPS and triple machine guns 88% more. The 5% bonus damage doesn't help much either, as it only applies to targets that have more than 2800 shield points remaining. Further, dual machine guns are still better against bombers as the extra damage a fast cannon would still have a lower DPS than dual machine guns unless the target has more than 3750 shield points remaining.

The only thing that the Kingfisher really shines at damaging are turrets, most other things would be more quickly dispatched by a Mamba.

However, it does handle like a dream as other have said-- which is enough of a reason alone for me to enjoy flying it.

I have a Merlin and I've gotta say that a G5 is one of the only ships that worries me... Well, that and a V66 if they can fly it.

The G5 does handle wonderfully, but I do find myself using a touch of boost here and there, especialyl when zipping around a carrier avoiding defenders. The boost regen on it is so nice that it's not a huge deal tho. As long as you aren't laying on the gas pedal, you can boost-zip around for ages. Ask Gamut, who was chasing me all over the place yesterday.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I ended up grabbing the G5 and I'm extremely happy with it so far Smile

It does drift some, but it drifts when I want it to, as opposed to drifting no matter what. It's not massive damage, but it's enough damage for me.
